About the Blogger

Fierce, Ambitious and of course, Disruptive

My name is Stephanie and I’m a PhD student researching at the intersections of race, gender, and religion. I’m a 30-year old cis, mostly hetero, Christian, Womanist, southern, single Black woman trying to manage her mental health, bank account, and her mouth. I have been described as disruptive and brilliant, hence the name of this blog. I’m addicted to books and reading, I love to sing and am always down for a music jam session and a good meal. Sitting at “The Cusp of Energy” (for my astrology buffs out here), I’m an ambitious and sensitive soul. Not for the faint at heart or easily frightened but I am definitely someone you want to have in your corner. I live by three mottos that work for the good of each other well:

“Do no harm but take no shit”

“I’m scared and doing it anyway”

“Nothing human can be alien to me.”- Maya Angelou

Let’s embrace our own brilliance and the disruption we cause.

Why a blog? A few reasons:

  1. I spend a lot of time in my head and I have lots of thoughts. Why not share them? I’m hilarious!

  2. I’ve been through some shit and seen some shit in my short 30 years that I think others could benefit from. It’s always nice to know you’re not alone, right?

  3. I care deeply about people, the struggle for liberation, and the legacy we leave for those after us.

  4. Like many of you, I battle my own loneliness, depression, and anxiety while trying to remain hopeful and grounded in my faith practice and maintaining my connection to mind, body, and spirit. #selfcareyall

  5. I’m a HELLA dope millennial Black woman and we need to hear more of our voices in public spaces. As I minister to you, I’m ministering to myself.

  6. I have a wonderful community of folx who teach me everyday and I want to share their wisdom with you.

What this blog will consist of:

  1. Motivational start of the Week which will focus on a self-care and/or faith practice element. I hope to share a quote, Scripture, Surah, or an affirmation, or mantra for your week. I may also share a resource that I have found to be helpful for me. This part of the blog is totally self-serving. I know that this PhD process will be difficult for me and I’m gonna need some encouragement and motivation along the way.

  2. Loud Mouth Lucy Column. In my family, Loud Mouth Lucy is a common term to use to describe someone with alot to say about lots of things. I don’t know if this was the origin of the term but there was a 1950’s song by Roy Gaines about a woman that he was dating who talked “so much”. It’s a traditionally sexist song, as expected if I’m honest. In my family, we use it in humorous terms and for all genders of people but I understand it may not always be received as real reclamation. So I’m reclaiming this term and using it to highlight people in my circle and other folx in the global struggle for liberation for minoritized people. I am a Loud Mouth woman who will always tell you what I think. No shame! So if you think you have something Brilliant or Disruptive to say about the struggle for liberation, send me an email! The LML column will be updated on a monthly basis. From time to time, this will be just a text interview and other times, it will be an audio or video interview.

  3. The ButterPhlyD Project: As I navigate the PhD process, I’m going to share my triumphs, struggles, and tips and tricks as I learn them. This will be updated on a bi-weekly basis.

  4. Song of the Week: I’m a BIG music fan so I will suggest you check out a song that I’m vibing to!

  5. Womanist Analysis: In my field, many minoritized scholars emphasize the importance making our work accessible to academic and non-academic audiences, alike. In this section, I will attempt to do this via sermons, books, movies, news interviews, songs, and anything else that piques my interest! like to watch sermons online and I will offer some insight from a womanist lens. This part of the blog will be updated on a monthly basis.

  6. Periodically (read: when I feel like it), I will also write about my personal life like ending my engagement, heartbreak, navigating racism and sexism, and managing parent-adult child relationships amongst other things.

Liberation is ours but they aren’t handing it out. We gon’ have to take it. You ready? Let’s get it!
